Natural Heritage Land Trust 2004 Stewardship Award

The Town of Merrimac was presented with the 2004 Stewardship Award by the Natural Heritage Land Trust (NHLT) in Madison, WI on Thursday, May 6, 2004 at its 10th Annual Stewardship Awards Banquet.  Town Chairman Richard Grant and Town Administrator Tim McCumber were on hand to receive the award.  The award was presented by Mike Slavney, of Vandewalle & Associates.

The NHLT banquet program reads, "The Town of Merrimac is a small town with a big vision...one that includes natural areas and open spaces in their community.  Moreover, it's a town committed to implementing its vision.

"Last November, this Sauk County town purchased a parcel of land on Lake Wisconsin.  The purchase is important because it provides an oasis of open space on a very developed lake and because it ensures public access to the lake.  It's historic because the Town is one of the smallest government entities in Wisconsin to purchase recreational land; generally county and state governments make this kind of investment.

"Between this acquisition and a purchase of adjacent land by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), more than 12 acres of land and over 1,000 feet of shoreline will be available for public use.  This land adjoins a five-acre parcel owned by Badger Army Ammunitions Plant.  If this land were deeded top the DNR, the combination of these parcels would create the largest land conservation and recreational area on Lake Wisconsin.

"The Town plans to work with the DNR to manage the combined properties.  The Town's vision includes providing fishing access, hiking trails, and nature observation points.  Contingent on funding, DNR would like to create day use sites and a boat access on its portion of the land.

"Today, we honor the Town of Merrimac for its vision and commitment to maintain open space.  We hope that other municipalities look to the Town of Merrimac as an example of how local leaders can protect open spaces near our communities."
